Sharing Economies

If you’re unfamiliar with the concept of sharing economies, you’re in for a treat because there are more currencies in Heaven and Earth, Horatio, than are dreamt of in your financial system.

Money’s just one kind of currency — and it’s not even the most valuable!

There are time-based currencies (and Time Banks!), emotional currencies (there’s emotional labor, too, which is a hugely important concept to grok), social currency, the currency of stories — all kinds of currencies all interacting with one another whether we know how to track them all yet or not.

If this is news to you, neato — Shareable.net is a great place to start.

(You may want to grab a pen, or get ready to bookmark a whole bunch of pages, because there’s allll kinds of shiny info and ideas out there.)

The interwebs has sped up the coalescing of folks aware of and interested in different currencies and the sharing economy is pretty much a mainstream thing.

From Burning Man to Airbnb, from Lyft to Little Free Libraries, there’s a vibrant and diverse upswell of sharing economy stuff going on all over the place.

Oh, and, uh.. you probably want to get comfortable with these concepts, because between 3d printing and AI/robotics, work as we know it is about to change dramatically.

(Don’t freak out, though, because there’s already enough resources available for everybody. Just by expanding your perspective you’re already on the road to adapting to and participating in whatever niftyness lies ahead.)

Another world is not only possible, she is on her way. On a quiet day, I can hear her breathing. —Arundhati Roy
